About the Artist

Since attending Dartington College of Arts in Devon, England in 1977 - 78 as a mature student, I have worked consistently as a painter and a muralist in a variety of media, both in the UK and on the Continent. I held solo exhibitions in Torquay in the 80s and between 1989 and 1994, whilst travelling in Europe, exhibited work in several galleries in France and on the Algarve. In the nineties, as a member of the Salon Des Peintres on the Isle de Re in France, I participated in summer exhibitions with much success and sold through local galleries on the Island.
I exhibited for some years in a London gallery and held solo exhibitions in many Kent venues, including Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Dartford and Sidcup.
Since moving to Romney Marsh in 1999 I have taken part in local exhibitions, held open studios and participated in the South East Open Studios event, held in June each year.

My subjects range from old steam locomotives, disused farm machinery, the evidence of vanishing industry on marshland and coastline to architectural detail of old vernacular buildings. It is my endeavour to depict the poignancy and drama to be found in these vestiges of a vanishing age that are often overlooked. The paintings are expressionist representations of the subjects, sometimes consisting of a particular detail rather than the whole. They contain unusual perspectives and strong contrasts of light and shade. I work in oil on canvas and use heightened and unusual colour effects.
