Spot Series--by Marie Kazalia
I recall now, that as an art student I made a silkscreen of a repeating spot pattern for printing serigraph prints. I also recall now how I told another art student that I loved spots but that my love of spots puzzled me, surprised me, and embarrassed me even! I didn't want to make spot art. I had not chosen to make spot art, but spots had chosen me. I repressed my urge to work with spots and focused on other interests.
Now, the spots have resurfaced in a new series of paintings on paper.
I realize that working with spot patterns opens up so many possibilities, and I have new understanding of the often heard there is freedom of creativity within order –I note possibilities opening up as I paint my somewhat ordered spot paintings. Ideas flow. I have sketchbooks filled with my ideas, and as I paint a new piece more thoughts, understandings and ideas emerge. I am eager to see where these series of spot paintings will take me.
