About This Piece
View of a scene in Petra, Jordan.
For the last few years I have worked mostly in acrylics and mixed media on canvas or board. While I enjoy many different forms of art most of my work tends towards realism or representational art as I am constantly amazed by my surroundings and have an abiding need to paint what I see. Movement, colour and light are the driving force in my paintings. I love the colours, space and distinct seasons of the countryside where I live and I hope I’ve been able to show some of that in my landscape paintings, but I also like to portray people and places as if they are caught unaware at a moment in time, both locally and when I travel. Many of my paintings are of scenes of life in and around Ottawa, but I also like to capture people going about their everyday life wherever I go. I’ve recently embarked on a series of paintings of people and places in the Middle East and have been particularly inspired by my recent trips to Jordan.
These images of some of my most recent paintings are of scenes from the Caribbean, Europe and the Middle East and also local scenes of landscapes and streetscapes. My signature painting is of three of my grandsons playing on the beach.
My goal with these paintings is not to just be able to paint pretty pictures, but to create works that fully depict the emotion, expression and feelings of the subject, but I am also more and more aware that my art is also about perfecting my skills by using composition, perspective, proportion and the elements and principles of art in order fully accomplish this.
