About This Piece
A moment that can never happen: passenger pigeons were hunted to extinction in 1914. They were numerous across America and, like all of the pigeon family, hardy birds. The effect humanity can have on even the most established wildlife is shocking. This piece forms part of my Rats with Wings collection and is intended to provoke consideration of the attitudes that proliferate towards our ‘vermin’ animals. Foxes and pigeons proliferate today, but their positions are always threatened. Intimacy between two species that have more in common than we’d like to admit.
I work mainly with oils on canvas, I love the rich sumptuous nature of this medium, however since I do most of my preparatory sketches in charcoal or pencil I occasionally use these raw mediums to complete a piece if i feel intuitively drawn to do so.
I use my art as a way to explore social and political issues that interest or concern me as well as delighting in pure beauty.
